VERY VERY PROUD of my students today!! At the SD National Association of Teachers of Singing state competition Angela Anagnostopulos 1st, Abbie Palmer 2nd & Karli Mazzone 3rd place in the HS girls division and Adante Carter 2nd place HS men's division. Also competing, Julia Kellie Urban, & Gretchen Messner. Wonderful job all of you! You make me look good!! =D

Also a HUGE thank you to Janet Jensen for her fabulous accompanying. I couldn't have gotten through this day without you!! You are very appreciated!

National Honors Choir Results

Congratulations to Angie Anagnostopulos, Karli Mazzone, Gretchen Messner, and Ashley Smith who successfully auditioned for the 2011 ACDA National Women's Honors Choir and to Adante Carter who successfully auditioned for the 2011 ACDA National Men's Honors Choir, both to be held in Chicago! Out of 4000 applicants these 5 wonderful students were just what the judges were looking for; I'm very proud of you! Unfortunately, there were those who didn't make the honors choirs this time around, but they deserve congratulations for doing the work to complete the audition process - a feat in itself! Kudos to Kate Vickmark, Jackson Long, Sarah Huebner, Abbie Palmer, Sonya Dick, Shelyssa Theel, Kayla Blickensderfer, Evan King, and Rachel Long.

Whether you were successful or not, the effort required to submit this audition earns you a gold star in my book! Congrats and Kudos to you all. ~M ♪

National Honors Choir Update

Hi all. I just got word from the ACDA national office in Oklahoma City, that there were just over 4000 applicants for the honors choirs! AMAZING! I'm so proud of all of you who worked so hard to put together your audition. You never know what kind of voices they're looking for, so I'm crossing my fingers they like what they hear from you. Whatever the outcome, keep up the good practicing and working hard for what you want! =)

ACDA National Honors Choir Auditions Complete!

Despite having bronchitis, pneumonia and laryngitis, I recorded 14 MusikHaus students and submitted them for consideration to the American Choral Directors Association National Honors Choir. The national convention is in Chicago this year, March 9-12, 2011. All the auditionees did very well and I'm very proud to sponsor them.

Black Hills Idol Winners!!

Congratulations to Angie Anagnostopulos, MusikHaus student, CHS junior and winner of Hot 93.1 Black Hills Idol Competition today! She was absolutely spectacular, giving a sultry, unforgettable rendition of “Fever” in the style of Eva Cassidy. Her vocals were perfectly on pitch and full of sound , she had impeccable mic technique and looked like a million bucks. She was the definition of classy style and outstanding performance presence; a well-deserved win! Fantastic job today Angie!!

And in 2nd place, only one point behind Angie, was Jennifer Zebrowski’s performance of “Bad Romance” in the style of Lady Gaga. She has a poise and powerful presence on stage that demands attention and vocals that leave no doubt to her talent & technique. For those of you that don’t know, she’s on her way this October to the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in NYC… I hope they’re ready for the amazingness that is JZ!

What a wonderful afternoon of crazy, amazing performances by two of MusikHaus’ finest students! You girls make me incredibly proud to be your teacher. Looking forward to great things to come!

Fall Lesson Information

Crazy times!!

Hi all. I hope you’ve a great summer, there are still a few weeks left to squeeze in some fun in the sun! What a crazy time it's been for me. I had to cancel lessons this summer - something I've NEVER done - so I could take care of some pretty unexpected and serious health problems. I had major surgery on July 20th; my doctor found a very large tumor in my uterus (NOT cancer!! hooray!!) and I had to have a hysterectomy. I promise I'll keep the rest of the gory details to myself; it's been quite the experience. =) Anyway, I am doing very well; getting better every day. Sleeping is how I recover the best, so I've been spending many hours with my eyes closed. I'll be good as new by the time school starts... so everybody better be ready! =D

So, for the rest of the summer, I'll be working on practice files, adding some new classes to my schedule, and preparing materials for MusikHaus Recitals, Piano Proficiency & Sight-Singing Skills classes for voice students, Young Vocal Artist Competition, NATS Competition and National Honors Choir, MTNA Competition, BHAMTA Piano Festival and MUCH more. There is SO much to look forward to this year!

The lesson schedule is online now. You can choose your preferred lesson time by filling out the Registration Form to the right. I will assign you a lesson time based on your choices and send you an email confirmation.

I'm looking forward to getting back to reality! I've missed you all! See you very soon. =)

Another amazing day...

I'm so very proud of Jennifer Zobrowski & RaeAnne Schad, co-winners of the first annual National Association of Teachers of Singing competition held in Vermillion on March 27th. I took 5 students to this event; Jennifer, RaeAnne, Ariel Diamond, Angie Anagnostopulos, and Tori Looyenga. All the girls gave VERY strong performances... I would have put them up against many of those college girls! :)

You were wonderful representatives of MusikHaus. BRAVA!!

What an amazing day! March 20th, Young Vocal Artist Competition. Every one of my students gave their personal-best performances. Congratulations to all; Ariel, Ellyse, Karli, Gretchen, Jennifer & Angie.

First place: Jennifer Zobrowski, alto, CHS senior. Stunning performance!!
Third place: Angie Anagnostopulos, soprano, CHS sophomore. Fantastic job!

Also a shout-out to Sean Sterling, bass, SHS senior and student of Bart Torbert. 2nd place. Fabulous performance. Gave Jen a run for her money!! ;)

Great job students. I'm very, very proud of all of you!

The Jazz-Classical Connection with Dr. Janeen Larsen

“The Jazz-Classical Connection” is the topic of a talk to be presented by Dr. Janeen Larsen at the Black Hills Piano Gallery in Rapid City on Saturday, February 20, at 2:00 pm. The one-hour presentation is open to the public at no charge. The presentation is aimed at the general public as well as piano students and teachers. Janeen Larsen is a classically-trained pianist who also performs and teaches jazz piano. She is the author of the book, “Jazz Piano: A Primer for Classical Pianists.” In this presentation she will briefly discuss the history and evolution of jazz. She will also demonstrate on the piano many of the similarities and differences between classical music and jazz. It may surprise people to learn that learning to play jazz may be as difficult for a classical pianist as it is to learn to be fluent in a foreign language, and Larsen will talk about some of the challenges faced by a classical pianist who wants to learn how to improvise jazz.. Larsen is presently a Professor of Music at Black Hills State University.

Then, fill out the Fall Registration Form to choose your lesson time. (If you are wondering if there is an earlier or later time possible than what is listed, indicate that on the form.
